Reviews
Great fun
Torquil and Clare
Charlie has been a fantastic teacher, reminding us of all the things we had forgotten from when we last played Bridge 15 years ago. He has made the whole thing really enjoyable and is always incredibly patient. The classes are well structured but Charlie is also happy to respond to questions that come up during play. He manages the difficult job of keeping the class moving on while never rushing or pressurising us. It’s been great fun!
Patience of a saint
Sharon Simmonds
Learning to play Bridge was on my bucket list for many years, but it always had the stigma that you had to be old to play. Well I wished I hadn’t listened to those people who thought that, and started playing years ago. I am loving the tuition that Charlie gives us as a group once a week. It is fun and he has the patience of a saint. We all started as beginners and approximately 16 weeks on, a group of us mature ladies can now master playing a game, with Charlie’s guidance. I don’t know how he’s achieved this, as we are all hopeless at remembering and practising, but he has. I cannot recommend Charlie as a Bridge Tutor at whatever level enough. Not only do you get excellent first class tuition, you get a lovely calm friendly face with it.
My attention didn’t wander for a second
Aine Fox
Fantastic! Loved that it was a small group so that everyone could follow what was being taught with enough time for group level-appropriate questions. My attention didn’t wander for a second. Rare for me! I was really grateful for the comprehensive notes as there were some concepts I couldn’t pick up fully in the moment - such as why and when to push for games over sacrificing and hand construction - with the notes, I can now process these later. I believe that Charlie could really help us to improve our teams performance. Having an international player as Coach is likely to encourage more people to play in teams events in and for the club.
DY
I thought Charlie was excellent… the Andrew Robson of tomorrow.
Kind Teacher
Joan Bailes
Charlie clearly enjoys bridge and has a lot of knowledge to impart. Charlie has a sense of humour and is a kind teacher which is important.
Thank you for your very good teaching and patience. Charlie's course was fun and I learnt a lot. All I have to do now is practise what you taught us !
Eternally Positive Attitude
Ben Norton
Charlie is a fine young player with an eternally positive attitude and professional demeanour. No matter what has happened at the table, he keeps a cool head and his eye on the prize.
Despite his age, he plays with the experience of a veteran, but that doesn't make him invulnerable to the occasional off-centre action and creative thinking which makes him an oh-so-interesting partner and teammate.
Whatever the scale of the event, anyone sitting opposite Charlie is bound to enjoy themselves, while picking up many a good result and learning a great deal about the game along the way.
Excellent Bridge Player
Gunnar Hallberg
Charlie Bucknell is a very good-humoured guy and an excellent bridge player. If you are looking for a partner in order to improve your game, Charlie is the man . He will be the guy with whom you can enjoy working on a perfect bidding system. I've known Charlie for a few years and I have played against him and with him on numerous occasions. It's been a pleasure.
One of England’s most talented young players
David Bakhshi
Charlie is one of England’s most talented young players. Combined with his excellent table manner and interpersonal skills, it is no surprise that Charlie is such a popular and highly sought after partner.
Patience of a Saint
Angela Allis
Charlie is a natural teacher!
He has corralled our group of complete beginners and with his sense of humour and clear explanations has made us all far more confident than we could have imagined. None of us had a clue what we were doing at the beginning and he always responded with laughter and the patience of a saint. Bridge is challenging and we all needed someone calm but fun to lead us all along.
Excellent Teacher
Gary Frank
Charlie has been an excellent teacher, knowledgeable, considerate and above all very patient! And he makes it a lot of fun
Supportive partner
Linda Benneworth, EBU Overseas Congress Host
I really enjoyed having Charlie as a partner in Rome for the EBU congress. He was always positive, supportive and non threatening even when I misunderstood bids. It was a pleasure to have his advice and I enjoyed his company hugely. I would happily partner him again in the future.
Helped our confidence
Ashley Sawyer, Regional Master
After a bad congress, I asked Charlie to go through the hands with my partner and I. He absorbs the hands, gives salient advice, and helps grow our confidence. The next time my partner and I played together we won!
Knows his stuff!
Cath Fox, Vice Chair of EBU
Charlie, really knows his subject, and is determined to make Bridge FUN for everyone. He has a fantastic hand bank of tricky but fun defence problems that are brilliant for learning once you’ve kicked yourself one or twice.
